The follow-up to Growing Pangs, Turning Twelve gets into what it means to have a crush on someone of the same gender and what impact your surrounding environment can have on how that already confusing time makes you feel. Also, it peeks into how male dominated culture can dictate what girls should wear based solely on how it might make boys feel. As a dad who’s always fighting against crop-tops and short shorts, this was really eye-opening. As always, graphic novels have a unique way of showing the internal monologue happening inside the minds of children that we as adults have no way to see. With Turning Twelve, now there is.
