Wow. This should be required reading in all schools so that every child knows what it takes to be in this country when you're not from this country. How did she make this funny at the same time as tearing at your heart? Read this after your kid has read it and you'll have tons to talk about as the characters all have their own story that constantly evolved. One of my favorite things I've ever read (kid or adult). There is a sequel as well that gets even deeper into the world these kids must navigate. Wonderful characters and spectacular plot twists to keep the pages turning and the book being re-read.
